Guttentag! Welcome to Portland, home of tasty eats on wheels, where German and Czech cuisines are beginning to make their mark. Today is the grand opening of VanSchnitzel's, the schnizel van. As a girl who was raised on Spaetzle, I couldn't be happier. One of my dreams for FoPo is that, one day in the not-too-distant future, we'll have an array of food cards (perhaps in the triangle park near Guapos?). Speaking with my neighbors has revealed that, although we do have good food within walking distance, it's not affordable to everyone. So, Food Carts are the answer, I'm convinced. It's wonderful to see new carts opening on the East side. VanSchnitzel's looks pretty special. Someone there clearly knows social media, since the owners have been blogging about their van adventures for months at VanSchnitzels.com. The van will be open today from 11:00-2:00, so make your plans. They'll be located at 26th, one block south of Holgate. (Score! Bike-able!) Here are a few of their offerings: Hey, in case you missed it, the Willie Week recently put out their list of 2010 Cheap Eats, and they included Foster-Powell! Relative newcomers Foster Burger made the list, as did the Arleta Library Cafe, An Xuyen, Bihn Mihn Sandwiches, Pho Hung, and Powell Seafood Restaurant. What do you think? Did the WW miss any cafes? Here's a link to the Foster-Powell Cheap Eats story. It has been a habit of mine and my friends, Bogs and Mike, to walk along the long street towards our house after office. We are quite heavier when we were younger because we do the wrong exercise. Oftentimes we would enrol on gyms and then forego the training program when we do not like the service anymore. We tried going out of town to do mountain climbing, surfing, biking-but all of these were quite financially draining to think that we have our own families to support and weekends are supposed to be bonding times with our wives and children. As a columnist, I have read a lot of research papers about the benefits of long walks. My personal take on this is that when you slowly see what is outside of you, and you take the time to just be with your feet, you are on hold and in control. You feel the breeze and you breathe more often compared when you are just seated until arriving at your destination. You are not bugged by unwanted noises of other passengers and not harrased by the slow traffic jam. I am speaking...

With the tragic and unexpected loss of CAVA I'm trying to be more aware of our local businesses. If anyone has information on new places, noticed something while driving by, or just has an opinion, I'd like to hear it. The Bar Carlo website says they had to cut their evening hours, but that they have started offering free movies Wednesday and Friday night. They also posted a request: "please let us know what you’d like to see more of from us." Grandma's Funky Furniture has moved east along Foster Rd. Are they here to stay? Amor Lounge is open. Not the best decor in the world but a pretty impressive $5 gyro. Anyone try that new Hawaiian place? Are they a bar too? And did anyone know there's a really good Japanese restaurant on Powell? I think it is called Ichidai. Took me a whole year of walking by before I noticed it. Anyway, if you like this place or others around the 'hood, help support them and let us know something about them. Thank you. My wife and I have only just learned of Cava’s closure last month. Perhaps that means we didn’t support it as much as we could have, but we had been there quite a few times over the last year, since moving in to Foster Powell. We thought it was one of the best restaurants in Portland, let alone FoPo, and our friends agreed. The perfect combination of cozy ambiance, fabulous food and interesting drinks. A real gem in the neighborhood’s fledgling crown. We will miss it sorely, and we will hold out hope that it can be resurrected in the not-too-distant future. It's a sad day for the neighborhood, but hopefully the trend of new and diverse businesses coming in can continue. I guess it's a lesson for us all... Remember to support your local establishments! I had a great time last night, meeting Linda from the Oregonian blog and putting faces to our board members' names. It was an action-packed meeting, as facilitator Erica pointed out, so I'll space out my entries-- one post per topic. One issue that may have already been decided is the addition of a Lottery "Cafe" (bar?) in the shopping center at 52nd, near Sweetness. Concerns were raised that such establishments would attract crime and unsavory characters. One attendee explained his frustration by saying, "This is exactly the sort of sleaze we're trying to get away from." Foster-Powell has more than its fair share of dive bars, lottery cafes, and nearby strip clubs, but as a newbie to the area, I'm unsure of their impact on local life. How do you feel about a new lottery cafe next to Sweetness? The issue was left to be researched more before the next neighborhood association meeting, but the possibility...
